Emotions are neither good nor bad. They are information: the body’s language for what matters to us. In the Emotion pillar of the Elemental Alchemy Framework, we treat them as energy in motion that wants to keep moving.

Trouble starts when an emotion can’t complete its journey. When an experience overwhelms our capacity to process it, the nervous system responds with fight, flight or freeze, and the unfinished response can stay held in the body. Talking about it helps, but the body often holds emotional memory that thinking alone can’t reach.

Moving it through the body

That’s why somatic practices are so useful: body scanning, gentle movement, breathwork and shaking. Shaking is something animals do naturally after a fright, and many people find it surprisingly releasing.

A practice to try

Next time a strong feeling arrives, pause. Name it, find where it sits in your body, and breathe into that place. Then stand up and let your body shake loosely from your feet upwards for one minute. Finish with three slow breaths and notice what has changed.

If you’re living with trauma, go gently, and please work alongside a qualified professional. More on the Emotion pillar.
