Many traditions, from Ayurveda to the medicine wheel, describe the world, and us, through elements. In the Nature pillar of the Elemental Alchemy Framework, we work with five.
- Earth: structure, stability and grounding. Your bones, your routines, your sense of home.
- Water: flow, emotion and adaptability. What nourishes and what needs to move.
- Fire: transformation, digestion and drive. The spark that turns intention into action.
- Air: movement, breath and thought. Lightness, communication, change.
- Ether: space and spirit. The container in which everything else happens.
Balance doesn’t mean having equal amounts of each. It means noticing which element is overwhelming you and which is missing. Too much fire can feel like burnout; too little earth like being ungrounded.
A practice to try
For one week, spend a few minutes each day with a different element: walk barefoot on the earth, sit by water, light a candle and watch the flame, breathe deeply outdoors, or simply sit in quiet space. Notice which one you most needed.
